Hi, my name is Steven. If you are reading this, that means that you might be thinking of adopting me. Foster Mom thought it would be helpful if we told you a little bit about me. I came to the shelter from the Maricopa County Animal Care & Control facility. I’m just a little guy and I was so scared. Shortly after I arrived at Sun Valley I got kennel cough. And the fact that I kept going to the outside section of my kennel didn’t help. The barking inside scared me even more. So I tried to hide outside. That’s when I was sent to my Foster home. There was a Foster Mom and Dad, and even four other dogs. All of the four were bigger than me (two males and two females). There I was; scared, sick, and losing weight. But then everything got better. I had people and dogs to play with, good food, and a house and a yard. Everyone went slowly with me and in no time I was settling into my new surroundings. It was much quieter, and I could concentrate when I ate. Foster Mom gave me my medicine and I began feeling better.

I eat Science Diet Small Bites with some can food mixed in twice a day. Foster Mom could move my bowl around and even pet me while I ate. It didn’t bother me. She also gave me Waggin’ Tail brand Porkhide Twists to chew. Wow !! I found out that I really liked them. I would rather go “potty” outside but I don’t use the dog door. I can go through it if the flap is up. But when it swings and makes the noise, that scares me. I can usually “hold” it but if you don’t get me out regularly, I might have a slip up in the house. I can wait all night without having to go “out”. But I do need to go out in the morning right away to do my “business”. I hope my new family will be patient with me and work with me on house training. I love to go outside in the back yard and sniff around and investigate. It was also fun to just go out and run around or lay on a rug in the sunshine. In fact, Foster Mom had trouble getting me in sometimes, even when it was freezing. She says that maybe I was kept outside all the time and that I didn’t feel as though I belonged inside. She says I’m better now and that I don’t have to feel scared about being inside. I’m just too small of a dog to be forced to stay outside. But I do hope my new family has a yard for me to play in.

At night I slept in the big bed with everyone. I would jump up on the chair next to the bed and then right into bed. My favorite place was between Foster Mom and Foster Dad’s pillows. If I got cold in the night, I would curl up next to foster Dad and he’d keep me warm. And in the evenings, I loved to sit and snuggle up with Foster Dad in his recliner while he watched TV. He would rub my tummy and my ears and I would cuddle up next to his neck. In just a short time, I was feeling better, eating better, and I really felt safe. I rarely bark, but if I do, I’m letting you know a stranger is coming. I’m very good about riding in the car. I just lay in my dog bed. I know the commands “no” and “stay”. I’m trying to learn “sit”. I’ve almost got it. But I’m still very young and I hope my new family will teach me lots of other commands and tricks good dogs should know. Oh, and I really love to play with stuffed dog toys.

Foster Dad calls me his “cuddle bunny”. And Foster Mom says I’m very, very, special and that I’ll steal your heart when you aren’t looking. I just want to feel safe and have a family that will be there all the time to love me. If you have another dog that could be my buddy, that would be great too. I loved being around the other dogs. So if you think I could be that new dog in your life, please contact Sun Valley Animal Shelter in Arizona.
